My buddy Lacey found a New Jersey pet adoption agency who had the genius idea to name their adoptable animals after celebrities. Above you will see the information for Rob Lowe, and you can see his sister Carey Mulligan here.

If you live in the tristate and are thinking about expanding your family, I can think of no better reason than this.

my friend adopted Walter White from this group and he’s the best little dog!

this is a spot by tbwa/chiat/day for apple, called ‘photos every day’. the craft is fantastic, and there’s some subtle, unusual attention to detail in it.

let’s take a look at the sound mix. here’s a waveform of the spot:

and now here’s the waveform of a conventionally mixed spot — this is that ‘old spice’ commercial everyone flipped out for a couple years ago. it might as well be any ad you see on tv today.

huge difference. there’s incredible restraint in the amount of compression applied to the music in ‘photos every day’. (from wikipedia, compression “reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by narrowing or “compressing” an audio signal’s dynamic range”.) my point here is that if you caught this on tv, it would be substantially ‘quieter’ sounding than other ads around it.

the other interesting thing about the mix is that the iPhone shutter click sound is substantially undermixed. it comes across as incidental, and unobtrusive. the ambiences are the real star here, and the sound editor wasn’t even afraid to drop them out entirely for effect (see snowy skyscraper, 0:23).

other observations:

• there’s a real nice match-cut at 0:06 of the guy jumping off his skateboard into the shot of the jogger running.
• 0:25, the iPhone bobs up and down at a concert, and halfway through, the shot itself starts bobbing with the phone, keeping the screen stationary in the frame.
• overall, there’s a very careful variety of perspective, scale, and involvement. are we peering over someone’s shoulder? watching from across the street? ostensibly taking the picture, ourselves?
• i could have done without the voiceover at the end.

As for Disney’s grand “Star Wars” plan, it’s sounding an awful lot like the one Abrams once envisioned for “Star Trek.” There will be television properties, theme park rides and spin-off films all centered around the new trilogy that Abrams will oversee. It’s a page borrowed from Disney’s exploitation of the Marvel comic books and if it works out, it should make Abrams very rich indeed.

lots of Buzz on the web today about how Abrams jumped so quickly at Star Wars because the classic dispute between Paramount (who owns the movie rights to Star Trek) and CBS (who owns the TV rights) destroyed his grand plan for connected Star Trek tv shows, movies, video games, theme parks, etc… After the 2009 Abrams Star Trek, there was lots of talk about his writers Orci and Kurtzman starting to talk about how a tv show would work and apparently they ran into the same politics and money grabbing that killed the franchise back in 2005.

Although I am absurdly excited to see what Abrams does to Star Wars, its a damn shame that Star Trek once again can’t get its act together and pushed away the best thing that ever happened to it in my opinion. Although Abrams repeatedly says he will be back for a third movie and I am sure will help hand it off to a director he trusts like Brad Bird, it says nothing for Tv.

In a television world where long-running thematic scifi is now the hot thing (Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, True Blood, soon to be SHEILD… ) it is such a travesty that Star Trek is completely absent. Even with the utter size of the fan-bases and companies that own them, tuning into a new Star Trek, Avengers, and Star Wars story every week on tv, it apparently really is too good to be true.

They must’ve gotten a hold of OUR Model Wife subway ads and gone to town. Great job timing though, because the season finale of Model Wife is coming out on Blip NEXT WEEK. Great timing indeed.
