“Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of stephen.”

Don’t tell anyone, but the full unedited version of A Muppet Family Christmas is on YouTube.  I had a recorded VHS copy of this as a child and my brother and I wore it out from watching it. It still mostly holds up and I think the only time the entire Muppet, Sesame Street, and Fraggle cast appear together.

Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas is on Netflix Instant Streaming. You are welcome.
(how they did the puppeteering of the characters in boats still baffles me to this day)

Thoughts on The Muppets

I guess I have to preface this with the fact that I grew up a massive fan of all things Henson. Some kids early on have imaginary friends to talk to and play with, they are usually people or animals… My parents tell me my Imaginary friends were muppets. This fascination didn’t truly end and I even flirted with getting a degree in puppetry and took classes to that end in college. So take this as you will.

To me, The Muppets is a wonderful magical film. I however, saw it with someone who for whatever reason didn’t really like it and ended up on his phone through most of the movie. I think this is a key piece to my outlook on this movie. It is a children’s movie not for humans in the ages of 2-12 variety, it is a children’s movie for the inner children of the 70’s and 80’s that haven’t been destroyed by negativity and trying to “grow up” and leave wonder behind. The makers of this movie not only knew this, it is a core piece of the message of the story.

This movie dared to do every single thing life, rules, and being trendy tell us not to… Full out musical numbers (created by the team behind Flight of the Conchords that mesh so well with the muppets, it is a miracle Jason Segel made that connection), totally clean intelligent humor, constant breaking of the fourth wall, and all practical special effects… It is a miracle The Muppets exists.

There is this amazing phenomenon that muppeteers often talk about, where they can stand and perform in plain sight of a child with a muppet on their hand and the child will refuse to even acknowledge the human is there, staring and talking directly to the muppet, mouth agape. That magic, that blind wonder, is still alive in some of us (hopefully most of us) and this movie is flooding with it. It is made for the lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Yes, I went there. Deal.

“By the time Segel was in his 20’s, his obsession was apparent to anyone who set foot in his tiny one-bedroom apartment: ‘All there was decorating it were Muppet figurines and Muppet posters - until I realized maybe that was why I was still single,” he says.
This sounds very very familiar…
I’m getting stupidly excited that we are less than a month away from this movie.
